the Year in Review

December 8th, 2009 (03:06 pm)

Oh wow, how funny it is to go back and read some of my stuff from this time last year. So very up and down. Some of it sad now, knowing what I do. All in all, even with cancer scare, back surgery, Sam trying to kill a cat, having a falling out with the Doberman rescue group, letting the cat entirely out of the bag re: lyingcuntbitchwhore and thereby breaking diplomatic relations with not-BF, meeting current-BF, personally wetting myself in a nice Scottish restaurant (whilst having a seizure and dislocating my left shoulder), stopping taking all of my brain-altering meds (except the anti-anxiety ones, still need those), it's been a pretty decent year. Economy is crap, but I still have a job and can pay my bills and I am ever so grateful for that alone. Oh yeah and i fell over backwards during a volleyball tournament just last week and nothing broke. Hooray!!

Now if only I could get the ex to sign the paper i need to actually get this divorce thing OVER... sigh. :) It's always something.

Best holiday wishes to everyone!!

Visit China's Forbidden City -- as a virtual eunuch

By Emma Graham-Harrison Fri Oct 10, 3:28 PM ET

BEIJING (Reuters) - Culture fans thousands of miles from Beijing can now visit its famous Forbidden City, through a three dimensional recreation of the vast palace that also allows them to dress up as an imperial eunuch and meet a courtesan.

One of the jewels in China's cultural crown, the sprawling complex in the heart of the capital already gets tens of thousands of real-life visitors each day.

But now online tourists can also watch the Qing dynasty emperor feast at dinner, train fighting crickets and feed them with blood-fattened mosquitoes, or practice archery with the help of a courtesan.

At the virtual palace, unveiled on Friday, they can also dress up as part of the huge imperial entourage.
"When you enter the Forbidden City you choose one of nine historical costumes, which is to give a sense of history but also keep a sense of decorum," said John Tolva, program manager at IBM who led the project, dubbed "Beyond Space and Time."

"You can't run and you can't fly," he added, a restriction that aims to prevent other virtual visitors, whom you can see and interact with, being distracted.

The program does not shy away from the racier sides of imperial history, shaped in part by the legions of eunuchs who controlled portions of court life and could rise to great power.
"One of the costumes you can chose is a eunuch," said IBM Vice President Paula W. Baker -- though to spare blushes that avatar is only labeled "imperial servant."

They also appear in some of the bureaucratic roles they might have filled hundreds of years ago.
"There are eunuchs, for instance in the 'approving imperial memorials' scenes," Tolva added.
Those who are interested in other intimate aspects of the emperor's life have a chance to get an up close look at the women chosen to serve him.

"There is a painting being done of the emperor and the courtesans are there, orbiting about tending to him while the painter does his job," Tolva said.

"And for all the activities where you actually do something there is an attendant who is styled as a courtesan."
The museum hopes the program (www.beyondspaceandtime.com), which is based on computer gaming software, will earn new fans for a cultural landmark which survived China's tumultuous 20th century in remarkably good form.
It has been over three years in the making and cost over $3 million, provided by IBM as part of a community program.

Exacting curators feel the result offers a good introduction to the palace, but worry there has been a certain sacrifice of historical accuracy for the convenience of a modern visitor.

"You wouldn't have been able to just wander around like this," said Hu Chui, director of the Information Department, gesturing at a soldier avatar striding toward a central hall.

"You would have been kowtowing and anyway, he is on the imperial pathway. You would get arrested for that."

Which Goddess lurks in your soul?

May 22nd, 2008 (04:00 pm)

Which Goddess lurks in your soul?

Hecate

You hold more power in your little finger than most do in their entire being! Hecate is perhaps the most selective of all deities who inhabit the souls of mortals. Being the goddess of the crossroads, Cosmic Knowledge, and of course witches and magic she can’t be bothered by residing in the souls of the mundane. She often chooses those who practice the craft of the old ways and those who harbor deep mystical secrets that must be kept close. Your soul is old, perhaps having been present at the birth of the cosmos in some form or another. Your ability to comprehend the necessity of death and it’s beauty have awakened a connection to the underworld, where Hecate has been known to reign and you relish this otherworldly bond. Darkness suits you well, as many of the best secrets of the cosmos can be found there.

...and sometimes it's kinda weird to be Jack

May 22nd, 2008 (02:24 pm)

I park at a local department store to shop for a new swimsuit. I note a guy pulling in on a motorcycle in the row across from me. He comes into the store behind me and as I veer off in search of swimsuit hell, I see he's looking at me, so I flash him a smile and keep going.

About five minutes later, I notice he's kind of been following me around the store. Oooook... Finally, he moves in and says:

"You'd look good on the back of my Harley."

To which I oh-so-wittily reply: "Uhhhh. Thanks?"

I must have sounded completely baffled because he continued "You're very attractive." Like maybe I thought he was saying I'd make nice luggages?

At this point, I mumble something about how he's very kind to say so and make a beeline for the dressing rooms, grabbing random things as I go. I just don't want to deal with this because I'm too nice to tell people to fuck off, even if  they are kinda creepy.

I hang out in the dressing room for a bit texting people and trying on the things I had actually picked out, and then make my single purchase and head out.

He's still in the parking lot, just sitting on his bike. He grins at me as I exit the store. I'm thinking "Here we go...." but he just wishes me a good evening and I drive off kinda wishing I didn't have customized license plates on my Jeep.

Funniest part is, not two minutes earlier I'd been chatting with not-BF in the parking lot. Talk about timing!

I suppose Jack would have shagged the fellow, but after trying on several hideous bathing suits, I was SO not in the mood. Not that I woulda otherwise. He was my mum's age and, well, I got all I can handle right now.

Note to self: The red dress has strange effects on people. Wear with caution.

Being a magnet for chatty weirdos is always interesting!
